A Russian drone struck a passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British prime minister Boris Johnson and other senior Western figures had passed through the same area, raising questions over whether the delegation itself may have been the intended target.

The strike occurred near Yahodyn, roughly two kilometres from the Polish border, during a large Russian attack involving more than 450 drones and missiles across Ukraine. The targeted train was on the Kyiv-Warsaw route. No casualties were reported on board.

Shortly beforehand, a separate diplomatic train carrying Johnson, former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt and several European security advisers had passed through Yahodyn station. Former CIA director David Petraeus was also in the area aboard another train.

Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said the diplomatic train had left ahead of schedule and suggested that it may have been the intended target of the Russian drone. That possibility has not been independently confirmed.

Johnson and the other delegates had been returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, where political and security figures gathered to discuss Ukraine and European security.

The timing immediately drew attention because the strike came so close to a high-profile Western delegation and so close to NATO territory.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting following the attacks. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski described the incident as an escalation and argued that it should strengthen, rather than weaken, European support for Ukraine. He noted that the strike occurred only a few hundred metres from Poland’s immediate border area.

Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha went further, describing the attack as Russian terror reaching the doors of the EU and NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the locomotive had been deliberately targeted and warned that continued Russian strikes risk spreading instability deeper into Europe.

European officials also interpreted the attack as potentially intended to intimidate Western governments. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the strike appeared to send a message to the West and argued that European countries should respond by strengthening their commitment to Ukraine rather than being frightened away.

Russia has not acknowledged targeting the diplomatic delegation. The Kremlin has said Russian forces will continue military operations throughout Ukrainian territory, while Russia’s defence ministry has said recent attacks in the area were aimed at infrastructure used for military cargo entering Ukraine from Europe.

That leaves the central question unresolved.

The diplomatic train may simply have passed through an area Russia intended to strike anyway. Or the unusual timing may indicate that Moscow knew who was travelling through Yahodyn.

For now, there is no evidence proving an assassination attempt.

The incident demonstrates how little distance now separates the war in Ukraine from NATO territory.
