Federal agents are investigating reports that an incendiary device was thrown at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday night, in an incident that prompted a law enforcement response but caused no reported injuries or significant damage.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on October 20 at 180 Ted Turner Drive SW, a federal building that houses ICE offices and an immigration court. The FBI's Atlanta office dispatched agents and evidence response technicians to examine the scene and determine what had happened.

“There is no known threat to public safety at this time,” the FBI said in a statement, adding that investigators were continuing to collect evidence.

Atlanta police initially reported that an unidentified object had been thrown at the building. Officers secured the surrounding area while federal investigators took charge of the inquiry. There was no active fire when police responded, and authorities reported no injuries.

The FBI has not identified a suspect, disclosed the device's composition or established whether it was capable of causing significant damage. Investigators have also not announced a motive or said whether the incident is being treated as a politically motivated attack.

The location serves more than one federal immigration function. Alongside ICE operations, it houses the [Atlanta immigration court on Ted Turner Drive](https://www.justice.gov/eoir/atlanta-ted-turner-drive?ref=theglobalvoice.com), where immigration judges hear cases involving people facing removal proceedings and other immigration matters.

The incident comes during an increasingly contentious period for American immigration enforcement. President Donald Trump's administration has expanded deportation operations, tightened immigration screening and increased scrutiny of foreign nationals already holding US visas.

The administration said on October 20 that it had revoked more than 300,000 visas since Trump returned to office, presenting the figure as evidence of tougher enforcement. The wider campaign has provoked legal challenges and public protests over immigration policy and federal agents' conduct.

But authorities have disclosed nothing connecting Tuesday's incident to any protest organisation, immigration dispute or political movement. The identity of whoever threw the reported object, and what they intended, remain unknown.

The [Justice Department's immigration court status register](https://www.justice.gov/eoir/immigration-court-operational-status?ref=theglobalvoice.com) lists the Ted Turner Drive court as open, although officials have not separately confirmed whether Wednesday's hearings or other building operations were affected by the investigation.

Federal investigators have not announced any arrests or charges. Their immediate task is to establish what was thrown at the building, whether it was an effective incendiary device and who was responsible.
