A rapper from Mizoram, another from Bihar and two performers from Kerala's underground music scene are among 23 artists performed at Spotify's RAP91 Live in Mumbai on Saturday, October 24\. The concert brings together performers working across nine languages, an unusually broad representation of India's regional hip-hop communities on a single stage.

The fifth edition of RAP91 Live features established names including DIVINE, Arivu and Panther alongside artists who have developed their identities outside India's dominant commercial rap markets. Jelo represents Mizoram, Arinar Black comes from Bihar, Bhadrankar is associated with Gujarati hip-hop, while VENGAYO brings Tamil rap to the programme. Kerala's Anohnymouss and STIC are also on the lineup.

Their presence offers a different picture of Indian hip-hop from the one familiar to audiences who primarily encounter the genre through Mumbai's gully rap, Punjabi commercial music or Hindi-language releases.

The participating artists are not all making the same kind of music. Tamil rapper Arivu, for example, has drawn on folk traditions and histories of caste discrimination in his songwriting. His 2021 collaboration with Dhee, [Enjoy Enjaami](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYq7WapuDLU&ref=theglobalvoice.com), incorporated references to agricultural labour, land and inherited cultural traditions. It became a major independent success without requiring its Tamil lyrics to be replaced by Hindi or English.

For performers such as Jelo and Arinar Black, the Mumbai showcase offers access to a national platform that artists outside the major entertainment centres do not always receive. Their inclusion also raises questions about what happens after a festival appearance. Whether it leads to new collaborations, paid performances or wider distribution will depend on opportunities beyond the event itself.

Spotify has positioned RAP91 Live as a meeting point for these different scenes. According to figures circulated with its September announcement, the showcase has featured more than 130 artists from over 25 cities and regions during its five-year history, with performances spanning more than 15 languages.

The company's [flagship RAP91 playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DX0XUfTFmNBRM??ref=theglobalvoice.com) has accumulated more than 470,000 followers, growing over 36% in two years. Its seven language-specific playlists, covering Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Haryanvi, Tamil, Marathi and Bhojpuri, collectively contribute to an ecosystem with more than 1.5 million followers.

Some of the strongest reported growth has come from languages that receive relatively little attention in national music coverage. Spotify says followers of RAP91 Marathi increased more than 155% over the preceding year, compared with growth exceeding 52% for Bhojpuri and 23% for Haryanvi.

These are playlist follower figures, not measurements of individual artists' earnings. They demonstrate growing interest in regional rap but cannot establish whether emerging performers are receiving a proportionate financial benefit.

The commercial opportunities are nevertheless becoming harder to ignore. Spotify's [September 2026 Loud & Clear report](https://newsroom.spotify.com/2026-09-02/india-loud-and-clear-report/?ref=theglobalvoice.com) found that Haryanvi-language streams had increased nearly sevenfold between February 2023 and February 2026\. That figure covers all Haryanvi music, rather than hip-hop alone.

There is another complication in the festival's format. This year's RAP91 Live is available exclusively to Spotify Premium subscribers through its Rewards programme, with limited registration. A showcase intended to introduce regional musicians to wider audiences is therefore also part of a subscription-based marketing initiative.

The arrangement benefits Spotify by giving subscribers access to an exclusive event, while participating musicians gain exposure through the company's promotional network. The publicly available announcement does not disclose individual performance fees or subsequent promotional commitments.

Saturday's concert is scheduled to bring these different strands of Indian rap together. Its more meaningful outcome will be determined after the performances, when artists from smaller regional scenes return home and attempt to turn national exposure into sustained careers.
