ONGC has discovered natural gas in a deepwater exploration well off the Odisha coast, providing fresh evidence of the hydrocarbon potential of the Mahanadi Offshore Basin.

The discovery was recorded on September 18 at well MN-DW18-1-H-D, located about 43 kilometres from the Konark coast. Drilling began on July 25 as part of the [Samudra Manthan campaign](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2293934®=48&lang=1&ref=theglobalvoice.com), which is intended to expand exploration in India’s deep and ultra-deep waters.

The well was drilled to a depth of 1,623 metres and encountered gas in an interval between 1,441 and 1,452 metres. ONGC said the well flowed gas for three days and produced encouraging indications of reservoir pressure. The company has not disclosed the flow rate, estimated reserves or expected production capacity.

ONGC will have to conduct further testing and appraisal to determine the size of the reservoir, the volume of recoverable gas and whether production would be economically viable.

Its proximity to the coast could work in its favour. Offshore discoveries located closer to land can sometimes be connected to processing and pipeline networks at a lower cost than fields situated farther into the Bay of Bengal. ONGC has also indicated that the discovery could eventually be developed with other nearby finds through shared infrastructure.

No development plan, investment estimate or production timetable has been announced. Any decision to construct offshore facilities or connect the field to the mainland will depend on the results of further appraisal work.

[The Mahanadi Basin](https://www.oil-india.com/krishna-godavari-basin-and-mahanadi-basin?ref=theglobalvoice.com) has been explored for decades but has yet to become a major producing region. Gas indications have been encountered in several offshore wells, while ONGC reported two discoveries in another deepwater block in 2024\. One of those discoveries, Uktal, produced more than 300,000 cubic metres of gas per day during initial testing, although assessments of the field’s commercial potential were still required.

The latest result strengthens the geological case for continued exploration off Odisha. India remains dependent on imports for a substantial part of its natural-gas requirement, making commercially recoverable domestic discoveries strategically important.

The immediate significance of the well lies in what it reveals about the basin rather than in any assured increase in production. If subsequent appraisal confirms a sufficiently large and connected reservoir, the discovery could form part of a broader offshore development.
