European diplomats visiting Palestinian olive harvesters in the occupied West Bank came under attack on Saturday when a group of masked Israeli settlers surrounded their vehicles, demanded identification documents and smashed a window of a Belgian consular car. Israeli police have opened an investigation into the incident near Taybeh, east of Ramallah.

The delegation included diplomatic representatives from France, Belgium and Poland, according to Israeli Army Radio. Witness accounts described seven masked men arriving on all-terrain vehicles, some carrying clubs, before confronting the visitors. Footage circulated by the broadcaster showed damage to a diplomatic vehicle and a person identified as a consul lying on the ground.

The diplomats had travelled to the area during the annual olive harvest, a period increasingly marked by confrontations between Palestinian farmers and settlers over access to agricultural land. Palestinian officials said the delegation was attempting to reach Taybeh when the attackers intercepted its vehicles.

Israeli police acknowledged receiving footage of the confrontation and said investigators were working with the Foreign Ministry to identify those involved, obtain statements from the diplomats and locate the suspects. The police condemned the violence and pledged to pursue those responsible. No arrests had been publicly announced at the time of reporting.

The attack follows a series of assaults on Palestinian farmers and journalists across the West Bank. On Friday, masked settlers attacked olive harvesters near Abu Falah, also in the Ramallah governorate, injuring several people, including American photojournalist Heidi Levine, who required hospital treatment.

The violence has been particularly damaging for Palestinian farming communities whose livelihoods depend on access to olive groves. An [October humanitarian assessment by the United Nations](https://www.ochaopt.org/content/humanitarian-situation-report-2-october-2026?ref=theglobalvoice.com) documented more than 50 settler attacks resulting in casualties or property damage during the final week of September alone. Olive trees, irrigation infrastructure and agricultural equipment were among the affected assets.

The UN has also recorded increasing restrictions on Palestinian access to farmland, with violence and intimidation preventing some families from cultivating land they have used for generations. In September, humanitarian officials identified the approaching olive harvest as a period of heightened risk for communities already facing displacement and declining agricultural incomes.

European governments have repeatedly criticised settlement expansion and violence against Palestinian civilians. During an [October 15 address to the UN Security Council](https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/a-viable-palestinian-state-requires-not-only-recovery-in-gaza-and-political-progress-but-an-end-to-the-violence-displacement-and-settlement-expansion-?ref=theglobalvoice.com), Britain warned that a viable Palestinian state required an end to violence, displacement and settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Saturday's confrontation brings European diplomatic personnel directly into the security concerns surrounding the harvest. Israeli authorities now face questions about how armed or masked civilians were able to confront an international delegation and whether the investigation will result in prosecutions.

The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and the full circumstances of the reported physical assault on a diplomat have yet to be established.
