Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India's ₹169-crore data centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Odisha on Sunday, October 25, adding a major new facility to the country's financial infrastructure as digital transactions place growing demands on secure computing systems.

Located at Info Valley-II in Jatni, near Bhubaneswar, the 18.55-acre campus will support the RBI's critical payment and settlement operations while providing specialised training in cybersecurity. It becomes the central bank's second major data-centre location after Navi Mumbai.

The investment comes as India handles an enormous volume of electronic payments. According to the [National Payments Corporation of India's latest statistics](https://www.npci.org.in/product/upi/product-statistics?ref=theglobalvoice.com), the Unified Payments Interface processed approximately 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026 alone.

UPI is operated by NPCI rather than the RBI's new facility, but its scale illustrates how extensively India's economy now depends on uninterrupted digital financial services. Banks, payment operators and settlement institutions increasingly require computing systems capable of handling large transaction volumes while maintaining security and reliability.

The new campus includes four data-centre facilities designed to host mission-critical payment and settlement systems and other RBI initiatives. The government's [official project announcement](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleseDetailm.aspx?PRID=2327861&lang=1®=3&ref=theglobalvoice.com) confirms that the infrastructure has received Uptime Institute Tier IV certification, one of the highest internationally recognised standards for data-centre resilience.

Tier IV facilities are designed with redundant systems and fault-tolerant infrastructure, allowing operations to continue through certain equipment failures. For a central bank, such capabilities are particularly valuable because interruptions to settlement systems can delay financial transactions across participating institutions.

The campus was developed at a site selected partly for its geographical stability and distance from high-risk international border areas. Its foundation stone was laid by former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on March 22, 2023.

Alongside the computing infrastructure, the Cybersecurity Training Institute will provide a dedicated centre for research and professional development. Its programmes will cover financial-sector cybersecurity, enterprise technology, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, according to the government.

The institute adds to India's broader efforts to strengthen defences against financial cybercrime. In May, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and Reserve Bank Innovation Hub [agreed to collaborate on AI-assisted detection of fraudulent accounts](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2260277&lang=1®=3&ref=theglobalvoice.com), including accounts used to receive and transfer proceeds from cybercrime.

India is also [exploring closer digital-payment integration with other BRICS economies](https://www.theglobalvoice.com/india-pushes-brics-towards-a-new-digital-payments-network/), including potential interoperability between central bank digital currencies. Such initiatives bring additional requirements for secure infrastructure, technical coordination and protection of financial information.

The Bhubaneswar facility gives the RBI additional computing capacity and a dedicated institution for developing cybersecurity expertise. Its practical contribution will ultimately be measured through the reliability of the systems it supports and the banking sector's ability to prevent, detect and respond to increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
