A Saturday night of homecoming celebrations near Florida A&M University ended with gunfire, injured children and police officers carrying victims to safety before the scene was secure. At least 12 people were hurt in the shooting near the university's football stadium in Tallahassee, with three suffering serious injuries.

Six of the victims were children, according to the Tallahassee Police Department. Eleven people sustained gunshot wounds, while a twelfth was injured during the incident. The authorities have not specified how that person was hurt.

The shooting occurred shortly before 8 pm on October 24, near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, a short distance from Bragg Memorial Stadium. Crowds had gathered in the neighbourhood following Florida A&M's homecoming football game against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Police believe a physical confrontation preceded the gunfire, although investigators have yet to establish who fired the shots or what caused the altercation.

By 11:30 pm, three victims were reported to have serious injuries, while nine others were in stable condition. The injured included six adults and six juveniles. Authorities have not reported any deaths.

In its [official account of the shooting](https://city.talgov.com/Main/News/6100?ref=theglobalvoice.com), the Tallahassee Police Department described officers entering the area while it was still unsafe, carrying wounded people away from the scene and helping transport them to hospital.

Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the presence of children among the victims made the violence particularly painful for the community.

"It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured," Revell said.

He praised officers who entered the area before it was fully secured, putting themselves at risk to reach people who needed medical assistance.

The shooting struck during one of Florida A&M's busiest weekends of the year. Homecoming brings students, graduates, families and visitors back to Tallahassee for football, reunions and celebrations around the university.

Florida A&M issued an emergency alert advising people near Bragg Stadium and Perry Street to avoid the area or shelter in place. The university subsequently said the shooting occurred near its campus and that the campus itself remained safe.

Police have not established that the university, its students or the football game were deliberately targeted. The proximity to the stadium and the timing of the incident do not, on their own, explain why the shooting occurred.

The investigation has been assigned to the Tallahassee Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit. Detectives are interviewing witnesses, examining evidence and attempting to identify those responsible. No arrests had been announced in the initial police account.

Investigators have urged anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about the people involved to contact police at 850-891-4200\. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.

For the families of those injured, the immediate concern remains their recovery. Police have not released the victims' identities or provided a timetable for further updates. The next answers will depend on what investigators can establish about the confrontation that turned a crowded homecoming evening into a scene of violence.
