The United States has suspended consular services at its embassy and consulates across Brazil following a reported security threat against American diplomatic facilities, adding another layer of uncertainty two days before the country’s presidential election.

The suspension began on Friday, October 2\. Visa interviews, routine consular appointments and other in-person services were halted, while American citizens were instructed not to approach US diplomatic facilities for emergency assistance. Those requiring urgent support were instead told to contact the relevant duty officer remotely.

Washington has not disclosed the nature of the threat or announced when normal operations will resume. The US State Department said it was working closely with Brazilian authorities to address the security concerns but did not formally connect the suspension to Sunday’s election.

Brazil’s Federal Police simultaneously carried out two search-and-seizure operations in São Paulo and the area surrounding Brasília. According to an [official police statement](https://www.gov.br/pf/pt-br/assuntos/noticias/2026/10/nota-a-imprensa?ref=theglobalvoice.com), the warrants concerned suspected planning that could have placed American diplomatic facilities at risk.

The operation was described as a preventive measure arising from cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies. However, investigators said they had not found evidence confirming the initially reported risks and had not identified any of the people investigated as members of criminal organisations. Communication equipment and digital media were seized for further examination.

Australia subsequently closed its embassy in Brasília and advised its citizens to avoid American diplomatic facilities. The Australian decision was based on the US security warning rather than a separately disclosed threat.

The timing has nevertheless made the shutdown politically sensitive. Brazil will vote on October 4 in the first round of an election dominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. If no candidate receives more than half of valid votes, the two leading candidates will contest a runoff on October 25.

The race remains extremely close. A recent survey placed [Lula three points ahead of Flávio Bolsonaro](https://www.theglobalvoice.com/lula-holds-three-point-lead-over-flavio-bolsonaro-in-runoff-poll/) in a potential runoff, but the difference remained within the poll’s margin of error. Other surveys have shown the candidates either tied or separated by a single point.

Relations between Brasília and Washington have become increasingly strained during the campaign. Lula has warned against foreign involvement in the election, while US President Donald Trump has said his administration is following the contest closely. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, a longstanding political ally of Trump.

The suspension has consequently generated allegations of political signalling from members of Lula’s Workers’ Party. Its president, Edinho Silva, questioned whether the closures could influence public perceptions of security before voting.

More than 158 million Brazilians are eligible to vote, according to the [Superior Electoral Court](https://www.tse.jus.br/eleicoes/cde-2026?ref=theglobalvoice.com). Polling will take place nationwide from 8 am to 5 pm Brasília time, with voters choosing a president, governors, senators and federal and state legislators.

The closure does not prevent the election from proceeding. However, the unexplained threat, diplomatic shutdown and accusations of foreign interference have intensified an already polarised atmosphere immediately before one of Brazil’s closest presidential contests.
