Violence at Lovely Professional University in Punjab began with an unverified allegation that a female student had been sexually assaulted inside a hostel. What followed was fuelled by conflicting accounts, distrust of the university administration and claims that outsiders entered the campus as the protest gathered momentum.

Messages circulating among students late on Saturday alleged that a construction worker or plumber had entered Girls’ Hostel-3 and sexually assaulted a student three days earlier. Some versions claimed that the hostel warden failed to report the incident and sent the student home. The allegation was later connected on social media to a claim that the student had died by suicide.

None of those details has been independently established. Police said protesting students could not identify the alleged victim, while three women living in the room where the assault was said to have occurred initially denied that any such incident had taken place.

The university released a video featuring the three students as evidence that the allegation was false. The women later claimed that they had been instructed what to say and that the recording had been edited and published without their consent. Those claims added to the suspicion among protesters that the administration was attempting to control the narrative.

Students began gathering near the hostel between 1 am and 2 am on Sunday. They demanded an investigation, greater security in women’s hostels, accountability from hostel officials and protection against disciplinary action for participating in the protest.

The demonstration soon spread towards the main entrance. Protesters damaged windows, furniture, flower pots, shops and motorcycles. Several objects were set on fire, while students climbed onto a decommissioned MiG-23 aircraft and a military tank displayed on the campus.

At approximately 4 am, protesters moved onto National Highway 44 and blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara section. The blockade continued intermittently for more than 15 hours, causing substantial disruption on the Delhi-Amritsar route.

Students said the initial protest had been peaceful but alleged that unidentified outsiders entered after the university gates were opened and began vandalising property. Police are examining surveillance footage following reports that people carrying walkie-talkies and possible weapons were present. No official conclusion has been reached about who they were or whether their presence was organised.

The situation worsened after talks between students, police and university officials failed. Protesters demanded that [LPU founder and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal ](https://ashokkumarmittal.in/?ref=theglobalvoice.com)address them personally. They also sought an apology from the administration and the removal of hostel officials if negligence was established.

Clashes erupted again on Sunday evening when protesters allegedly threw stones and bottles at police. Officers used force to disperse the crowd. A police jeep was set on fire, several other vehicles were damaged and more than a dozen people, including police personnel, were injured.

Punjab Police registered an FIR against an unidentified person under the rape provision of the [Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita](https://www.mha.gov.in/sites/default/files/250883%5Fenglish%5F01042024.pdf?ref=theglobalvoice.com) and created a seven-member Special Investigation Team. The team includes police officers, a woman inspector and representatives of the protesting students. Investigators are examining CCTV recordings, phone records and forensic evidence.

Preliminary enquiries have not substantiated the sexual-assault claim, but the registration of the case means it remains under formal investigation. Police are separately reviewing the death of a Telangana student who reportedly died by suicide approximately two weeks earlier. Authorities have not established any connection between that death and the allegation behind the latest unrest.

LPU has denied that an assault occurred and described the claims as false and fabricated. It suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed mid-term examinations. Police restored traffic on the highway and deployed additional personnel at the campus gates.

The immediate trigger was an allegation of sexual assault. The scale of the violence, however, resulted from the absence of verifiable information, students’ distrust of the university’s response, unsuccessful negotiations and the possible involvement of people who were not part of the original protest.
