US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has made an unannounced visit to the Middle East, reportedly meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at an airbase in southern Israel as Washington and Tel Aviv consider their next steps towards Iran.
The visit on October 19 took place at Ovda Air Base, where American military aircraft are reportedly stationed. The meeting with Netanyahu was reported by Axios, citing two people familiar with the discussions, but neither government has publicly confirmed the encounter or disclosed what was discussed.
Hegseth subsequently acknowledged travelling to the region through a post on his official social media account, saying he had visited American personnel serving under US Central Command (CENTCOM). He described them as being on a "historic mission", without identifying the mission, revealing his itinerary or explaining the purpose of his visit.
As always, it was an honor to visit our warfighters in @CENTCOM today. The best of our country, on a historic mission. Godspeed. https://t.co/UO094Mvw1e

The secrecy surrounding the journey comes at a sensitive moment for American and Israeli military planning. Israel has recently articulated a more aggressive security doctrine, with an emphasis on preventing emerging threats through pre-emptive military action rather than relying principally on deterrence and defensive responses.
In a national security doctrine released on October 18, Netanyahu's office identified Iran, Lebanon, Gaza and Yemen as interconnected theatres of Israel's recent military campaigns. The document called for greater operational independence, expanded domestic weapons production and maintaining technological superiority over potential adversaries.
A day later, Netanyahu visited an Israeli air force installation and warned that the military was prepared to strike again if required. The statement published by his office emphasised the readiness of Israel's aircrews and supporting personnel, although it did not announce an impending operation or refer to Hegseth's reported visit.
American military coordination with Israel is already extensive. Israel was transferred into CENTCOM's geographical area of responsibility in 2021, providing a stronger organisational basis for joint planning, exercises and regional defence cooperation. The command has previously documented cooperation with Israeli security officials on maritime operations and emerging military technologies.
The timing is politically sensitive in Israel, where parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 27. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Netanyahu shortly before the reported visit, while Vice President JD Vance said he was not taking a position in the Israeli contest.
Hegseth's presence in the region establishes that Washington's senior defence leadership is engaging directly with forces under CENTCOM at a time of renewed Israeli warnings towards Iran. Whether his reported discussions with Netanyahu involved operational preparations, intelligence assessments or broader military coordination remains unconfirmed.
